Opioids killed more than 42,000 people in the United States in 2016. To demonstrate the magnitude of the opioid crisis, an opioid memorial wall was created as part of the Lift The Label campaign. The wall stands eight feet tall and 34 feet long, and is constructed of 4,200 pill bottles; each pill bottle represents 10 Americans lost to heroin and prescription opioid overdoses in 2016. Every bottle has an anti-stigma message that encourages hope and recovery.

There will be a Docent on Duty at the gardens, located right off the river trail directly behind the Durango Public Library.  Docents will be on duty starting at 8:30 am until be available until 10:00 am EVERY SATURDAY (weather permitting).  If you are new to Durango, love gardening and want new ideas or you have been here forever  and just want to see the new Arboreta, our Docents will be available to answer all your questions.

As bears begin coming out of hibernation, Bear Smart Durango presents a live online webinar by New Mexico-based wildlife biologist Daryl Ratajczak with Wildlife For You on “Bears in Your Backyard” on Tuesday, April 30th from 6-8 PM, simultaneously at both the Pine River Library in Bayfield and the Durango Public Library.

This event is free to the general public and the unique presentation format allows attendees to ask Daryl questions about bears and best practices for reducing human and bear conflict.

Great Decisions-"Cyber Conflicts and Geopolitics"

Cyber conflict is a new and continually developing threat, which can include foreign interference in elections, industrial sabotage and attacks on infrastructure. Russia has been accused of interfering in the 2016 presidential elections in the United States and China is highly committed to using cyberspace as a tool of national policy. Dealing with cyber conflict will require new ways of looking at 21st century warfare. Is the United States prepared to respond to such threats? Great Decisions is co-sponsored by The League of Women Voters of La Plata County, The Durango Branch of the American Association of University Women & The Durango Public Library. Sessions will be held bi-weekly (every two weeks) from 11:45am to 1:45pm in Program Rooms 1 & 2 at the Durango Public Library. Join local wildlife conservationist David Neils for a deep dive on the habits and habitat of mountain lions in Colorado.  Learn what the magnificent apex predators tell us about the wild spaces that surround us and how to recreate and live successfully in the places they call home. 

David will take attendees on a deep dive on the habits and habitat of mountain lions in Colorado, and recreating and living with these magnificent apex predators. Enjoy learning the following:

          •  How mountain lions navigate and hunt in Colorado
          •  Mountain lion tracks, scrapes and other sign
          •  How to use four natural factors to pin point where lions are found
          •  Using remote cameras to capture lion images or video
          •  How to live or recreate safely in mountain lion country, and
          •  Navigating off trail successfully
